What’s in a name? For the students at Crispell Middle School, the answer is a lifetime of dedication.
Crispell Middle School stands as the original school building in the Pine Bush Central School District. As kids come through those doors each day, it’s just the name of the building. But where did it come from? Don Crispell, a hay farmer and retired school administrator, stopped by the school that carries his family name to talk to students about how the name became a permanent part of Pine Bush history.
Clarence Crispell was Don’s father. He was also a teacher, coach, counselor and principal of the school, which held all grade levels until Pine Bush High School opened in the early 1970s.
Clarence Crispell grew up on a farm. His father wanted him to work on the farm when he reached a certain age but he wanted to continue his education. He did just that and also was a farmer like his dad. He started as a teacher in the district in 1939. He was an athletic coach, too, and opened the building early each day for kids to come in and use the gym. But that was after he milked the cows on his family’s farm.
Clarence’s life was truly dedicated to the education and well-being of the students of Pine Bush. He retired in 1973 after 34 years of service to our district, and sadly passed away not long after. The building was named in memory of him.
Don Crispell was thrilled to share his father’s story with the students and staff of Crispell. And we were happy to learn about Clarence Crispell, his dedication and legacy.
