Potato Olympics provide lessons in physics, writing, math… and fun

Fourth graders at Circleville Elementary School were part of the second annual Potato Olympics recently. The events included:

  • Lawn bowling (closest to the target wins)
  • Sprint (3 meter dash)
  • Bowling (most pins down wins)
  • Diving (biggest splash wins)
  • Long Jump (farthest roll wins)

A fourth-grade girl with long blonde hair wearing a brown shirt holds a potato that is decorated with brightly colored pipe cleaners.

The games started with an opening ceremony complete with national anthems. Potato athletes (potathletes) competed in two heats of each event, which was recapped with a “Spud News” article. These articles detailed the event, comebacks, standings and even weird results like one potathlete getting wedged on the edge of the diving container.

Two fourth-grade boys stand at tall stools. On the ground are two measuring cups filled with water. They push their potatoes off the stool into the cups. One potato is halfway there and another made a big splash.

Six out of eight potathletes medaled, with Paxton winning a medal in every event! Two potathletes, Queso and Miguel Potato Fries, medaled in four events. Hash Brown became known as the comeback potato that consistently did better in its second heat.

Four fourth-grade boys stand on a grass field. One is bending over with a potato in his hands.

The closing ceremony included medal certificates and a sad but necessary farewell to our beloved potathletes. In the end, this very fun event gave students insight into physics, cooperation, sportsmanship, writing, and math.

Who knew playing with potatoes could be so much fun? And educational!

A large number of fourth-grade students stand and sit in a hallway. They are holding certificates.
