From CVMS to success! CVMS hosted a career fair for eighth graders last  week, providing them with information about careers in which they have expressed interest. An esthetician, barber, dental hygienist, police officer, car salesman and business owner made presentations to all the eighth-grade students recently.

They each spoke about what’s important in their profession, what is rewarding and what may not be the most fun but is part of the business. For example, as an esthetician, Daisy Avalos Lopez said she has to do the work she does but also promote her business. Social media is vital, she said. People want to see your work and social media is a great way to get it out there. She stressed how important it is to be professional, on time and make your clients feel good about themselves.

 

Officer Bhagwandeen of the Town of Walllkill Police Department talked about the life of a police officer, its benefits and hazards.

 

Dee Sonnadarage is a sales consultant with Middletown Honda. He talked about how the position is great for someone who likes dealing with people and cars. He always liked cars, he said, and the freedom one gets when owning their own car. He also handles the company’s social media.

 

Brian Baker, owner of Formula H Motorworks in Middletown, talked about owning his own business and how it stemmed from his love of cars. Having a business centered on something he loves – cars – is essential, he said. “For me, it’s a passion, not a job.” He started the business more than 40 years ago with two other people. He is now the sole owner and he has eight employees.

 

 

The owners of Bogey Barbers, Ricky Blendz, Trav Taperz and Saint Blasie, talked about using technology to assist them in their day to day. They use an app to make appointments, for example. They also talked about how important it is to keep their shop clean for their customers.

 

Sonia Vasquez, a dental hygienist at Brookside Family Dentistry, said she enjoys working with patients, assisting them in keeping their health good.

Assistant Principal Seth Siegel said a survey went to all 8th graders and these were the top careers they wanted to hear about.

In addition, Pine Bush High School counselors were present to share information about pathways toward these and other careers.

The students soaked it all in, listening intently to the presenters and following up with great questions and comments.
