The Gingerbread Man and a STEM activity are the perfect pre-break combination

Melissa Boniface’s students at EJR completed a fun STEM activity recently, which definitely kept them motivated before the winter break. They read different versions of the classic tale “The Gingerbread Man.” The students discussed characters, story elements and problems and solutions. They also compared similarities and differences between the stories.

A group of younger elementary students build a bridge with toothpicks and marshmallows.

The students were then presented with a problem – how to save the Gingerbread Man from the fox! They were tasked with using toothpicks and marshmallows to plan and create a bridge for the Gingerbread Man to safely cross. Then they tested to see if their bridge would hold a mini Gingerbread Man for 10 seconds. The class enjoyed each step of the process and all the bridges were successful!

Younger elementary students cheer as they create a bridge with toothpicks and marshmallows.
