The community of PAK fifth-graders moves up to middle school

Pakanasink Elementary School Principal Brian Breheny told his fifth-grade class just how proud he is of them and all they’ve accomplished.

“You’ve learned what it means to be a community,” he said, “built in respect and compassion. You’re not just moving on, you’re moving forward. Middle school will ask more of you but will give you more opportunities to shine!”

Mr. Breheny thanked the families and his staff for being role models for the students.

“Your children have flourished from the foundation and support you’ve provided,” he said to the parents and guardians.

He also reminded the students about the power of their words. “They can build someone up or tear them down. Words are powerful. Think before you speak. Imagine a world where people use their words to encourage others. Let’s make a promise to use our words to lift each other up.”

Amy Brockner, the district’s interim superintendent, reminisced about when the students first came to PAK.

“It feels like just yesterday you first stepped into the halls of Pakanasink, backpacks hanging low and eyes wide with wonder,” she said. “And now, here you are, standing tall, full of confidence and ready for this next adventure. You’ve become leaders in your building, role models for the younger students and a vital part of what makes Pakanasink so special.”

Looking forward, she said, staying true to themselves will serve them well.

“You’re about to begin a new chapter as you head to middle school – this middle school – Circleville Middle School,” said Ms. Brockner. “The building will be bigger, your schedule will be different, and yes – the lockers are real! While a lot will change, the values you carry with you should not. Stay curious. Stay kind. Keep lifting each other up. Your team is expanding – new teachers, new friends – and with it, your mission grows, too.”

After the speeches, some special awards were bestowed on the students.

The Triple C Award, recognizing the courage, character, and commitment of New York State’s outstanding students, was presented to Angelis Delgado-Hernandez, Ava Kyler, Avery Malm and Aman Salil Aluvila.

The New York State Comptroller’s Award is given to students who have shown academic excellence and the potential for leadership through involvement in activities that improve their school and community. The PAK fifth-graders receiving this award were Emmanuella Abrokwah, Gianna Andre, Andrew Hayden and Becca Pallay.

Four students received Principal Brian Breheny’s awards for supreme effort. They are Noah Clark, Avery Malm, Laurenn Mogene and Ja’Yveon Thomas.

After the ceremony, the PAK PTA provided refreshments for the fifth-grade students and their guests. They also gave each student a gift bag and had a cool backdrop for photos. It was great fun for all!

Congratulations to our new middle schoolers! Your future is so bright!
