Interim Superintendent of Schools Amy Brockner addressed the students, welcoming them into the National Art Honor Society and congratulating them on their ability and leadership.

“Today is a celebration of your creativity, your commitment and your courage to express yourself through art,” said Ms. Brockner. “Being inducted into this society isn’t just about talent, though each of you has plenty of tat. It’s about dedication to your craft, a willingness to grow and a heart that sees the world not just as it is, but as it could be.”

NAHS co-president Jenna Tracy provided a presentation that included the group’s activities throughout the year. They included giving out information at freshman orientation;, held fundraisers for the art club by creating clay keychains, ornaments and greeting cards and selling them; painted seasonal scenes on the library windows as well as on Main Street windows; created the menu boards for Noble Coffee Roasters; painted the backdrop for the Crispell musical, Alice in Wonderland jr.; partnered with the Pine Bush Special Education Parent Teacher Student Association (SEPTSA) to create beautiful window paintings throughout town for Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month; helped with the PBHS musical, Little Shop of Horrors, set design; presented the district-wide art show in April, providing art activities for kids including face painting, origami, caricatures and more; and facilitated the disabled artists workshop during Wellness Day at PBHS.

And there is much left on their agenda. During May and June, the NAHS will be hosting the Senior Art Show, painting the calming room mural at Pakanasink Elementary School, and completing the Free Little Art Gallery (FLAG) project in Pine Bush.

In her remarks to the students, Ms. Brockner encouraged them to continue to use their artistic talents to make an impact on the world.

“You’ve each shown not only artistic ability, but integrity, passion and a drive to keep learning,” she said. “That’s what makes you leaders – not just in the art room, but in your school and community. You now have the opportunity to life others up through your creativity, to share your vision and to create beauty that can make a real impact.”

This is the third year PBHS has a chapter of the National Art Honor Society. The NAHS is open to high school students who have demonstrated an outstanding ability in visual arts. This program supports members in their efforts to attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character and service. One of the goals for NAHS is to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.

The National Art Honor Society has provided national recognition and opportunities for students who exhibit outstanding scholarship in the visual arts, and for their teachers. Participation in NAHS provides students, faculty, school, and the community with invaluable benefits, including peer recognition, leadership growth opportunities and college and career preparation.
