October writing prompts have third graders thinking candy, pumpkins and costumes

Third graders at PBE started their October writing with some fun prompts.

Each week throughout the month, they will choose one of the prompts and write about it. Those prompts included giving instructions to carve a pumpkin, choosing just one candy to have for their lifetime, and giving their opinion on whether students should be allowed to wear costumes to school for Halloween, to name a few.

Meghan Cronin reviewed with her students that the first sentence is the hook or topic sentence, and its purpose.

The students in Melissa Leonardo’s class were eager to share their first writings of the month. One student chose Snickers as their lifetime candy, giving a delicious description of why that candy will sustain his sweet tooth for the rest of his life. The instructions on carving a pumpkin were detailed, and the opinions on whether costumes should be allowed were mainly in the affirmative, with at least one dissenting.

Students are learning to be detailed and descriptive in their writing, to give their opinions and back them up. The October-themed topics were fun for everyone!
