Meters of Mittens (and hats, gloves and scarves) line the halls at EJR

The décor at EJR is warm and inviting, thanks to Patricia Van Leuven’s fourth-graders. There are garlands of mittens and scarves and hats lining the halls! That’s because it’s time for Meters of Mittens, an annual project that benefits everyone!

The students put the word out to the EJR community that they are collecting mittens, gloves, hats and scarves for kids who need them. When the donations come in, the students lay them end to end on a measuring stick to calculate the meters of donations. They keep a running total each day, adding it to the amount from the day before.

The benefits to the students are both academic and character-building. These fourth-grade students collect the items and measure them. They are sharpening their math skills by measuring and adding and gaining such a wonderful life lesson – that kindness is key and taking care of each other is essential.

The Meters of Mittens project has been going on for 14 years now! And the EJR community comes through every time. Most of the warm accessories are kept in the nurse’s office for students who need them. The rest are donated to the Pine Bush Giving Tree on Main Street.

Anyone wishing to donate hats, scarves, gloves or mittens may stop by the greeters desk at EJR or send them in with your student.
