Jacob Quinonez, Salome Gomez introduced at board meeting as student representative and alternate

The Pine Bush Board of Education will have new faces at the table starting in July. That is when Jacob Quinonez, a rising senior, and Salome Gomez, a rising junior, will take their places as the board’s student member and alternate.

Last year, the New York state legislature passed a bill to require school districts to include a student representative on their board of education. The student is a non-voting member of the board but will provide regular and direct communication between the board and the student body, representing the student body and impacting decisions.

Students interested in being a student member of the board completed an application. They had to meet the criteria set by the administration. That included:

  • Being in good academic standing;
  • Demonstrating a commitment to civic-mindedness;
  • Exhibiting leadership qualities and be respected by peers;
  • Having good character.

The candidates provided references, wrote an essay about the position, and, after being qualified academically, the campaign started.

The vote was held on the same day as the district budget vote, May 20, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. via Google form. Jacob and Salome were notified the next day of their victory.

Jacob will be the student rep for the 2025-2026 school year, with Salome filling in as needed. She will, in turn, be the student rep for the 2026-2027 school year.

Interim Superintendent Amy Brockner introduced both Jacob and Salome.

“Jacob is deeply committed to helping students grow, succeed, and become confident leaders in their communities,” said Ms. Brockner. “He brings a strong belief in the importance of leadership, responsibility, and sound decision-making—values he strives to instill in others.

“Jacob is not only ready to serve—he is ready to inspire. He believes in guiding others toward their potential and is eager to contribute to the board by being a thoughtful, motivating voice for all students.”

As for Salome, she is passionate to serve as a voice for her fellow students.

“Salome is deeply committed to supporting her peers, her school, and the Pine Bush community,” said Ms. Brockner. “She views this opportunity not only as a way to contribute meaningfully, but also as a chance to grow as a leader—by listening, collaborating, and advocating for others.

“Salome believes that every student deserves to be heard, and she is eager to ensure that their thoughts and concerns are represented. With a strong ability to speak up and engage in thoughtful debate, Salome is ready to take on this role with both confidence and dedication.”

Congratulations to both Jacob and Salome. We thank you for your willingness to serve on the board and to represent our students!
