It was a poetry slam for CES fourth graders

Fourth graders at Circleville Elementary School were very excited for their first every poetry slam! Their classrooms were turned into hip little listening rooms where their friends and families gathered to hear the original poetry they had written.

Andrea Urmston explained that the students did an incredible job with the poetry unit they just completed. They started with acrostic poems, where the first letter in each line spells out a word when read vertically; then moved on to shape poems, inspired by author and artist Douglas Florian. They learned about Haiku poetry, which is unrhymed poetry consisting of three lines and a total of 17 syllables, and color poems inspired by their senses.

The students wrote their poems about butterflies, gnats, colors, the eclipse, plants, love, being afraid and cats, among other topics.

It was a great mix of the different types of poetry by the students in each of the three fourth-grade classes. They loved having their friends and family members come and hear them recite their original poetry. Their teachers and families were very impressed not only by their poetry, but their desire to share it with others.

Assistant Principal Joe Prestianni made a special guest appearance, reading his own poetry for the students. The special behind-the-scenes crew  were thrilled with the outcome!!

Great job to all!
