Who knew learning latitude and longitude could be this much fun?
Mrs. McDonald turned her classroom into the scene of a great cheeseburger mystery, challenging students to become Geography Detectives and track down the Hamburglar, who had, of course, stolen all of her cheeseburgers!
Working in teams, students followed their own unique escape route using a series of latitude and longitude coordinates hidden throughout the classroom and courtyard. Each team had to carefully read the coordinates, locate the corresponding spot, find the next clue, and record their progress along the way.
And the teams certainly got into character! Students became the Pickle Posse, Secret Sauce Squad, French Fry Fugitives, and Burger Bun Bandits, following playful clues that kept them moving, laughing, and engaged.
What made this lesson especially exciting was that students weren’t simply sitting and listening to a geography lesson, they were using geography to solve a mystery. They had to remember that latitude comes first, interpret north, south, east, and west, collaborate with their teammates, and carefully follow their assigned route.

The classroom was filled with energy as students worked together to follow the Hamburglar’s trail and get one step closer to recovering the stolen burgers. The final clue led every team to the same secret location where the mystery could finally be solved!
Learning, collaboration, movement, problem-solving, and a whole lot of fun this was geography students won’t soon forget!
A big shout-out to the winning team composed of Andrew Carbone, Connor LoMendico and Lindon Caba. Special thanks and praise to Mrs. McDonald for creating such an engaging learning experience and showing our students that sometimes the best way to learn is to turn a lesson into an adventure!
