Football team spreads the message of literacy while visiting elementary schools

Pine Bush High School gridiron stars made their way back to elementary school to help celebrate National Reading Month with our younger students, giving the message that reading is important throughout your life.

Two high school football players wearing blue jerseys read to a group of elementary students who are sitting on a rug in front of them.

The high school students broke into teams and headed to the four elementary schools. Many of the players were returning to the schools they had attended as kids!

Two football players read a book to younger elementary students who are sitting on a rub.

They read to different classes, some in teams of two and others solo. After reading, the younger students asked questions to the big kids. They asked about high school, football, reading, teachers and much more!

So many of the high school students roamed the halls looking for their former teachers to say hello to. At Pakanasink, art teacher Jessica Torres was as thrilled to see her former students as they were to see her! She showed them a board outside of her classroom that had photos of them on it! The kids got a kick out of seeing their elementary-sized selves.

At Circleville Elementary School a couple students made their way to the fifth-grade wing and surprised Susan Corcoran and Sean Healy, who were just thrilled to see them! They left a message with them to give their best to Ms. Robin Conklin.

What better way to encourage reading in our younger students than to have some of the people they admire read to them! Great job to varsity football coach Rich Ormsby and assistant coach Kyle Schneider who put this together and accompanied the boys to their schools.

National Read Across America Day falls on March 2, which is the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, the children’s author and cartoonist. He wrote and illustrated more than 60 books, many of which are some of the most popular children’s books of all time.
