Exploring the sticky world of oobleck

Lauren Casamento’s class at Circleville Elementary School did a cool experiment, combining reading and science!

A girl with her dark hair pulled back, wearing a red t-shirt and blue mask holds her two hands together with a pool of off-white liquid in it.

With March 2 being Read Across America Day, a celebration of reading on the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the class made oobleck, also known as cornstarch mud. That was after reading “Bartholomew and the Oobleck,” one of Dr. Seuss’s books, and the current science unit of learning about states of matter.

A boy with a blue shirt, glasses and a mask holds his hands over a white bowl that is filled with an off-white material. The liquid is on his fingers and dripping into the bowl.

In the book, the gooey green oobleck fell from the sky and wreaked havoc in the kingdom. In the classroom, it was messy but there was no havoc to be found.

The students discussed the ingredients (cornstarch and water), followed the recipe, and then explored whether oobleck was a solid or a liquid.

A boy with black mask and t-shirt holds up his hands with gooey stuff on it. A bowl sits on his desk with the off-white sticky substance.
