EJR students in grades 3, 4 and 5 learned about the importance of hands-only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to kick off Heart Health Month. Coaches Chris Curnan and Barbara Hostetter discussed the importance of knowing what steps to take in case of a heart emergency.

The students started off watching a video about hands-only CPR and the Kids’ Heart Challenge. Then Coach Curnan explained the mechanics of CPR to them, using the “look, listen, feel” approach, but that is after calling 911.
Be prepared to have as much information as possible for the 911 operator, who will also stay on the phone with them and help them stay calm during the process.

First they are to look to see if the person’s chest is rising and falling. Then they listen over the person’s mouth and nose for breathing sounds. Finally, they lean in with their cheek to feel their breath. Finally, they begin CPR.
Coaches Curnan and Hostetter explained and demonstrated just how to do CPR. They interlock their fingers, hold their arms straight and use their body weight when doing compressions on someone’s chest.

The goal is 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Coach Hostetter played The Bee Gees’ Staying Alive for the beat to help students when they were practicing, although they emphasized there really is no wrong way to do it. Anything is better than nothing to keep blood circulating until help arrives.

It was a terrific way to kick-off February and Heart Health Month. Students will be participating in the Kids Heart Challenge, raising money for the American Heart Association. Stay tuned!
