Dinosaur races at CES? Go!

Seth VanGaasbeek’s third-grade students at CES, as well as passersby in their hallway, had an interesting and fun lesson about dinosaurs that culminated in a dinosaur race!

During the lesson, students learned about fossil dinosaur tracks and that they reveal how quickly a dinosaur was running. Students figured out if they could have won a race with a dinosaur that was just their size! To determine the winner, students compared the length of their running steps with the dinosaur’s stride.

This activity wasn’t limited to the students. Any adults who passed by were invited to race the dinosaur that matched their leg length. Assistant Principal Joe Prestianni, STEAM coach Alyson Callahan, social worker Kelly Wallace, ENL teacher Catherine Aller and even Officer Gorman participated!

It was a terrific lesson – and fun – for the students to use their math  and estimation skills to figure out if they could win the race!
