Children’s book author visits kindergarten students at EJR

Kindergarten students in Elyssa Mock’s class at EJR had a very special visitor recently and got an inside look at just what it takes to write and publish a book.

A woman with glasses and shorter light hair sits in a chair holding a book open and reads to little kids sitting on a carpet.

Della Ross Ferreri is the author of The Mouse Buffet, a story about a bunch of mischievous mice, a sleepy orange cat and a buffet of sweets just waiting to be eaten.

A little boy smiles as he holds a children's book open.

Ms. Ferreri read the book to this very attentive group. They shared with her their very favorite parts. Then, she gave some of the students large storyboards, each with a scene from the book. They worked together to put the boards in the order in which they appeared in the book. They did a great job!

Kindergarten children hold story boards from a book. They are in front of a group of their classmates.

Ms. Mock covered all of the tables with craft paper and put out caddies of crayons. The students loved drawing their own buffet of their favorite foods and treats.

A woman hands a children's book to a little girl with long dark hair. \
The Mouse Buffet is Ms. Ferreri’s seventh book! Her other books are written for babies and toddlers but she said she loves this age group! She is a former middle school and high school French teacher.

A girl in a white shirt with long dark hair stands with a boy in a red sweatshirt and short hair. They are looking together in a book and pointing to things.

The biggest surprise came when Ms. Ferreri gave each student their very own copy of The Mouse Buffet! She signed each copy and wrote this note: “Reading is the sweetest of all!”

A full class of kindergarten kids stand with two adults. Some are holding books.
