What do you get when you combine STEM and Halloween? A whole lot of fun, engaging learning!
It was the 13th annual STEM Trick-or-Treat at CES last Friday. Our fourth graders rotated between classrooms for Halloween-themed lessons that put their math and science skills to the test.
Ms. Urmston gave a statistics lesson using M&Ms. Students categorized and counted the total number of M&Ms by color. Once each student added up their total, they calculated the average for each color.
Ms. Lazo’s lesson involved students constructing mini-catapults using plastic spoons, wooden sticks, and rubber bands. Once finished, students competed to see how far they could launch a small toy pumpkin. What a fun combination of physics, engineering, and friendly competition!
Ms. Bourke instructed her students to create spider webs out of pipe cleaners and string. The goal was to build a spider web that would hold as many candy pumpkins as possible. The highest record was 23 pumpkins!
What a fantastic hands-on learning experience for our fourth-grade students!
