EJR fifth-graders enjoyed an energetic and celebratory moving-up ceremony Tuesday morning, as their families, teachers and friends cheered them on as they head to middle school in the fall.
The fifth-grade band played beautifully to start off the ceremony and students cheered as their classmate received awards in art, music, band, chorus, library, physical education, citizenship and academics.

Joe Lenz, superintendent of schools, talked to the families and students about how proud they should be of all they’ve accomplished.
“You have worked hard to reach this day and you should be proud of everything you have accomplished,” he said. “Throughout this year, you have shown determination, kindness, resilience and growth. You have learned important lessons not only in reading, writing, math and science, but also about teamwork, responsibility and supporting one another.”

Samantha Diaz Acuna received the Jeanne S. Theis Memorial Award which honors the former EJR principal. This award is presented to a student each year who exemplifies the characteristics that made Mrs. Theis so special, including compassion, respectfulness and trustworthiness, to name a few.

The students who received the New York State Comptroller’s Award are Piper Conley, Lucan Gonzalez, Noah Golden, Natalie Coro and Annabelle Comerford. This award is given to students who have shown academic excellence and the potential for leadership through involvement in activities that improve their school and community.

The Triple C Award, recognizing the courage, character, and commitment of New York State’s outstanding students, was given to Henry Romaine, Michael Rohan, Dalila Mfuko, Della Dolan and Samantha Diaz Acuna.
Principal Joe Prestianni told the group that middle school is a much bigger world. He encouraged them to be courageous and take advantage of new opportunities.

“Your willingness to try new things will help you grow,” said Mr. Prestianni. “Always believe in yourself. You are ready for this next step.”
The class wrote a special song with music teacher Bill Losior. They proudly performed “We Are Moving Up” and ended the ceremony with the EJR alma mater. (Click here to watch and listen.)

After the festivities, the PTA provided red, white and blue frosted star-shaped cookies and water as the students gathered. The students and their families enjoyed gathering afterwards for pictures. A memorable day for all!
