Second graders in Suzanne Parker’s class at PAK read books and discussed the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Together, the class generated a list of words to describe him, such as leader, caring, wise, brave, positive, dedicated, peaceful, and activist.

Ms. Parker then guided students through the process of drawing a portrait of Dr. King. Each student selected words that resonated with them and added those words around their portrait of the civil rights leader.

As we celebrate the life of Dr. King, it is important that our students understand not only who he was, but also the values he stood for and how his legacy continues to inspire kindness, courage, and justice today.
