Crispell’s annual Career Day for eighth-grade students certainly had an impact on the kids, with 20 area professionals sharing information and hands-on activities with our students.

All eighth-grade students had the opportunity to choose three sessions, each lasting 25 minutes. They listened and asked questions, and even got to do things related to the particular job.

For example, engineers – both civil and mechanical – explained what their jobs entail and how their projects affect our lives. Students built structures hoping to support the most coins.

Dr. Stuart Tashman, a Circleville-area pediatrician, used a substance on kids hands that simulated germs. They were instructed on the correct way to wash their hands to get rid of the germs. They washed, and afterwards, they put their hands under a black light to see how well they washed. Let’s just say there was work to be done to keep hands clean!

Emergency Medical Technicians shared their experiences and showed how they take a patient’s blood pressure. They explained the importance of taking vitals with a patient.
Nurse Melissa Larson walked the students through the emergency room process. She talked about the equipment used and why intubation is sometimes necessary. This medical position comes with big responsibility, as nurses deal with life and death every day.

Firefighter Michael Cronin showed a very informative video on the responsibilities of a firefighter. PRG Concert/Broadway representative Daniel Murphy talked about the work his company does for shows, theme parks and museums.
Yearly favorites including a K9 officer, cosmetologist, chef, veterinarian, construction worker and SWAT team were also in attendance.

It was very informative and enjoyable for our eighth-graders, giving them a true sense of the professions open to them. The Crispell Counseling Department put this all together. A big thank you to our community partners who took time from their day to share their expertise and experiences with our students.
