A glimpse of the future at Crispell Career Day

Crispell’s annual Career Day for eighth-grade students certainly had an impact on the kids, with 20 area professionals sharing information and hands-on activities with our students.

A group of middle school students pet a large German Shepard dog.

All eighth-grade students had the opportunity to choose three sessions, each lasting 25 minutes. They listened and asked questions, and even got to do things related to the particular job.

Two middle school girls sit and eat together at a table, learning about culinary arts.

For example, engineers – both civil and mechanical – explained what their jobs entail and how their projects affect our lives. Students built structures hoping to support the most coins.

A man in scribs uses a black light to scan a middle school kid's hands.

Dr. Stuart Tashman, a Circleville-area pediatrician, used a substance on kids hands that simulated germs. They were instructed on the correct way to wash their hands to get rid of the germs. They washed, and afterwards, they put their hands under a black light to see how well they washed. Let’s just say there was work to be done to keep hands clean!

An EMT takes the blood pressure of a middle school girls.

Emergency Medical Technicians shared their experiences and showed how they take a patient’s blood pressure. They explained the importance of taking vitals with a patient.

Nurse Melissa Larson walked the students through the emergency room process. She talked about the equipment used and why intubation is sometimes necessary. This medical position comes with big responsibility, as nurses deal with life and death every day.

A woman stands in front of a classroom at a screen talking to students about nursing.

Firefighter Michael Cronin showed a very informative video on the responsibilities of a firefighter. PRG Concert/Broadway representative Daniel Murphy talked about the work his company does for shows, theme parks and museums.

Yearly favorites including a K9 officer, cosmetologist, chef, veterinarian, construction worker and SWAT team were also in attendance.

A large police vehicle in a parking lot with a cop outside explaining it to a group of students.

It was very informative and enjoyable for our eighth-graders, giving them a true sense of the professions open to them. The Crispell Counseling Department put this all together. A big thank you to our community partners who took time from their day to share their expertise and experiences with our students.
