Budding authors at PBE take Tofu the guinea pig on many adventures

Stacey Venzel’s fourth-graders at PBE are working on a book called “The Adventures of Tofu the Guinea Pig.” The students are each writing a story about Tofu. Those stories will be compiled together and published in a book. But first, there is a lot of work to do.

The students reviewed capitalization, punctuation, spelling and grammar. They learned the parts of the story that bring it life and engage the reader.

They also practiced peer and self-editing, adding in character traits and outlining their story with the Somebody Wanted But So Then summarizing strategy, used by the district.

The class used writing and editing checklists and anchor charts (ARMS for revising and CUPS for editing) to realize the importance of this step of the writing process.

It has been a lot of work for sure. But the book is shaping up and will go to press sometime in November, with delivery expected sometime in December. What a treat it will be to for the entire class to have their stories about Tofu published in one book!
