PAK first-graders learn kindness and unity during library time

Suzanne Newton’s first-graders love their library time! The students returned their library books on their way in and sat down on the colorful carpet for their story.

First grade students come into a library, putting their books into a slot.

They were good listeners – sitting with their hands on their lap and eyes on the teacher. Library media specialist Aubrey Zamonsky read Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun to the students. The theme of the book goes along with their kindness and unity theme for the month.

They discussed how to be an upstander and that kind words and gestures have an impact on people’s lives.

The story is about people being different from one another. We are different on the outside but all the same inside, is one of the messages. In the book, Lucy has curly red hair and likes some unusual food. Ralph is a kid who teases Lucy – and others – about the things that are different about her. She wants the bullying to stop. When Ralph is in a situation where he needs help, Lucy is true to herself and helps him. Things change after that.

Ms. Zamonsky asked the students about situations that happened in the book. They talked eagerly about how important it is to treat others with kindness.
