Languages Other Than English (LOTE)

Language offerings

 

Spanish I 

This course develops Novice Mid to Novice High Spanish Language
proficiency through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students
study vocabulary, grammar and culture of Spain, Mexico and other
Spanish-speaking countries.

1 credit/NCAA approved

Spanish II

This course develops Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid Spanish
Language proficiency through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Students continue to study vocabulary, grammar and culture of Spain,
Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries. Students must complete
Spanish I to participate.

Prerequisite: Mastery or successful completion of Spanish I 
1 credit/NCAA approved

 

Spanish III

This course further develops Intermediate Mid Spanish Language
proficiency through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Communicative style conversations are practiced. The Spanish FLACS Checkpoint B Exam, which includes all four language skills, is given at the end of the course during Regents week.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish II 
1 credit / NCAA approved

Spanish IV

This course develops Intermediate Mid to Intermediate High Spanish
Language proficiency through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Students also study the cultures of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries and are exposed to representative literature and videos. Proficiency is well developed at this point.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish III 
1 credit / NCAA approved

College Spanish IV

This course further develops Intermediate Mid to Intermediate High Spanish Language proficiency through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students also study the cultures of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries and are exposed to representative literature and videos. Proficiency is well developed at this point. Students must successfully complete Spanish III, pass the Spanish FLACS Checkpoint B Exam, have a “B” average and pay a college fee to participate.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish III

3 SUNY Sullivan college credits (FLA 2446 Spanish Language and Culture III, 3 credits, GE 9)

1 high school credit / NCAA approved

Spanish V 

This course develops Intermediate High Spanish Language proficiency
through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students also study
the cultures of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries and are exposed to representative literature and videos. Proficiency is well developed at this point. Students must successfully complete Spanish IV to participate.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish IV
1 credit / NCAA approved

College Spanish V

This course further develops Intermediate High Spanish Language
proficiency through conversation and composition skills. Students also
study the cultures of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries and are
exposed to representative literature and videos of various Spanish-speaking countries. Proficiency is well developed at this point. Students must successfully complete Spanish IV, have a “B” average and pay a college fee to participate.

3 SUNY Sullivan college credits (FLA 2447 Spanish Language and Culture IV, 3 credits, GE 9)

1 high school credit/NCAA approved

English as a New Language (ENL) 

This course is for students identified as Limited English Proficient/English
Language Learners. Students receive instruction in understanding, speaking, reading and writing the English language. Students are tested annually to determine their English proficiency for continued eligibility in the program.
