Students Making a Difference Club lend a hand at humane society

The Students Making a Difference Club at Crispell is back at it again, this time helping the Humane Society of Walden!

A middle school student with long dark hair sits on a bed with a book open. There is an orange cat curled up on the bed.

The students formed a relationship with this humane society last year when they began their “Plastic for Puppies” recycling program. The students collect all the deposit bottles and cans from Crispell and the Pine Bush District Office and donate the profits.

A middle school student with long dark hair, wearing jeans and a black sweatshirt sits on a chair and two midsize dogs are jumping onto her lap and she is petting them.

A middle school student with shoulder-length brown hair sits on a white rocking chair with a book open and pets a multi-colored cat.

On Jan. 31, six students from SMAD, including Yareli Segura, Layla Utter, Molly Moran, Shannon Williams, Ava Perillo, and Hailei Conklin, took a trip to the humane society and donated $150 that they have collected so far this school year. The donations was so much appreciated – nickels certainly add up!

A middle school student with dark hair pulled back, wearing several necklaces and a black shirt, smiles as she pets a black cat.

They also participated in the Rescue Readers program. This program allows school-aged students to read to the animals, allowing students to work on their reading skills and giving adoptable pets time with children to brighten their day! It was definitely the highlight of the school year for the SMAD club.

A middle-school student with short curly hair pets a buff colored cat, which is sitting on a tuft of artificial grass.

A group of six middle school students, four sitting on chairs and two standing all holding books, are with one adult, also sitting holding a book. Behind them is a wall painted with a puppy and a kitten. It says Humane Society of Walden Lives Saved Since 2012 7654.

There are so many beautiful animals up for adoption at the Walden Humane Society as well as and many volunteer opportunities. You can learn about the animals and volunteering at the society’s website, waldenhumane.org.
