Social studies takes a trip to Ancient China and the Chinese New Year

The students in Bobbi Walter’s sixth-grade social studies class have been studying about Chinese New Year, part of their Ancient China unit.

A sixth grade boy with short dark hair, wearing a black hoodie with blue, yellow and pink splashed on the front, sits at a desk reading a fortune after opening a fortune cookie.

This is the Year of the Water Rabbit. The students had a lot of fun making Chinese lanterns and finding out what Chinese zodiac sign they are. They also learned how fortune cookies are made – and they all enjoyed eating one and reading their fortune.

Some of the fortunes they got included, “If you do well in school, you can get your dream job,” “Always be nice and kind but don’t blind yourself with hate,” and “Let not your heart be troubled. Find peace in your life.” All very good advice!

A sixth-grade boy with short brown hair and glasses, wearing a blue hoodie, holds his fortune from a fortune cookie in front of him. He is smiling.

Ms. Walter invited Principal Lisa Hankinson to join the class  in celebrating the Chinese New Year. Ms. Hankinson learned that she was born in the year of the water rabbit and in 2023 she should follow her gut and be creative! Her fortune cookie would say “Come to school each day better than yesterday.” That’s a good fortune for everyone!

Afterwards, the students each designed their own fortune to put in a fortune cookie.  This week,  the students will enjoy celebrating the last day of Chinese New Year by eating Chinese food.
