PAK celebrates National Poetry Month with Poem in Your Pocket Day

April 29 was Poem in Your Pocket Day, a day to celebrate and share poetry. It is part of the April celebration of National Poetry Month.

Eight third-graders stand in two rows of four, all holding paper that says Poem in my Pocket. They are smiling.

At Pakanasink, students created paper pockets for their original poems, giving them handy access when they wanted to share with a classmate or staff member. Students in all grades participated, along with staff members as well.

A woman with blonde hair, wearing a dark jacket stands with an elementary boy looking at a piece of paper he is showing her. He has short light hair and is wearing glasses, and a blue and gray long-sleeve shirt.

Assistant Principal Colleen Delles read her poem to many students throughout the day, even handing out individual copies to students. In her poem, she described how much the students at PAK mean to her.

Three kindergarten kids stand reciting a poem. There are girls on either side and a boy in the center.

Students took on many subjects in their poetry – getting along together, playing video games, beautiful scenery, dinosaurs – it ran the gamut!

A little girl with shoulder-length reddish blonde hair smiles broadly as she puts a folder piece of paper in a pouch that says I have a Poem in my Pocket.

A girl with her dark hair in a bun smiles holding a piece of paper with a poem on it. It is coming out of a pouch that says I have a Poem in my pocket

But the purpose of Poem in Your Pocket was obvious – being creative, sharing poetry and reading to each other.
