Learning real life skills in Jennifer Muniz’s FACS class at Crispell

Real life skills! That’s what students are learning in Jennifer Muniz’s Family and Consumer Science class at Crispell Middle School.

A middle school boy and girl sit at a table and sew on orange pieces of felt.

This group of sixth-grade students are learning basic sewing skills. They discuss how much thread they’ll need (wide arm’s length, not a T Rex arm’s length) and how much must be left to tie it off when they’re done (about the distance between their thumb and forefinger).

A middle school age girl holds a piece of thread in her left hand and cuts it with scissors.

They were patiently threading their needles, knotting the thread and practicing their straight stitch on the pieces of felt. These skills will be put to good use as the students are sewing turtles – cutting out the felt, making their own design to sew on top and stuffing the turtle shell.

A middle school girl wearing a yellow Crispell Pine Bush tshirt smiles as she sews. A woman sits next to her and smiles too.
