What did you do to celebrate National Library Week? The theme this year was “Find Your Joy” during the April 19-25 celebration and Lisa Ruyack, library media specialist at Crispell Middle School, broke out the Legos and created a Make-n-Take Lego Batmobile center and a bookmark station.

“The Legos were donated by Legoland a few years ago,” said Ms. Ruyack. “Students were able to come down during study halls and from lunch to use their creativity to create a Batmobile to take home. Using their artistic skills some students chose to make bookmarks.”

Ms. Ruyack also offers an ongoing book club each month. This month, 8th graders are reading A Northern Light; 7th graders are reading Alone, and 6th graders are enjoying Hummingbird.
“We also have a dictionary challenge that is ongoing,” she said. “Students look up a designated word, define it, use it in a sentence, find a synonym and an antonym and get entered to win a prize at the end of the month.”

Libraries offer students lots of opportunities for learning and creativity.
Ms. Ruyack is also planning a 50 States Challenge later in May in honor of the 250th anniversary of our country.

“Making learning fun is what the library is all about,” she said.
National Library Week is an annual American Library Association (ALA) event celebrating the vital role libraries and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities.
