Chickens and ducks and (now) emus – oh my!

We have… emus! Stacy Venzel’s fourth-grade class’s emus hatched overnight on June 4. The students had watched the beginning of the lengthy hatching process during the school day. Students welcomed “blonde” emus Graham Cracker and Big Bird. As they’ve grown, Big Bird turned out to be the smaller of the two!

Two small baby emus are next to each other, with a woman's hand around one of them.

This class also had a duck incubation project earlier. They noticed several differences between the ducks and emus, from start to finish, including the hatching process. This allowed for rich discussion and combined ELA/science activities focusing on comparing and contrasting animal adaptations.

A group of fourth-grade kids gather to pet and play with baby emus.
The birds are now living on their forever farm with the class’s ducklings – Jalen Duckson–go Knicks!, Eggabelle, Dawn, Lemon, Midnight, and Quackers – as well as chickens Cole and Maise from Ariana Lofrese’s classroom incubation project.

Two fourth-grade boys pet a newly-hatched emu on a desk. They are smiling.

Such an amazing project for the students to follow, from egg to bird!
