Believe in your dreams! Never give up! Treat others the way you want to be treated!

Those were just some of the lessons students at Pakanasink heard from Mannie Nogueira, a professional BMX rider who gave a thrilling show, all while teaching good character. (Have a look at a video of some of his tricks.)

Nogueira explained to the students that he has been working on these tricks for many years and cautioned them not to try them at home. He used his riding as an example of chasing your dreams. He said there were people in his life who tried to talk him out of pursuing his career. But he persisted. When he failed, he never gave up. At one point, he attempted to do 10 spins at once. He did five. Then eight. Everyone chanted “don’t give up” and he thanked them for their encouragement and for believing in him.

Nogueira said he had to conquer some fears to get to this point, just like they do. He had a fear of falling off his bike and getting hurt. “Every time I fall, I get right back up,” he said, just like they should, no matter the circumstance.
He encouraged the students to be kind and help people. Don’t be rude and certainly don’t be a bully. Be a good friend and help out at home and school. The kids interacted with him, giving examples of helping out and being a good friend.

The amazing BMX tricks performed certainly kept their interest. Nogueira asked for volunteers to assist, even jumping over some fearless volunteers! And he kept reinforcing his message: Never give up. Be kind and polite. Believe in yourself and your dreams.
