2025 Grade 7 Honors Summer Reading

The objective of summer reading is to assist students in cultivating skills that have been built upon throughout their academic year. It is the hope that reading will strengthen and reinforce those skills that are vital to all aspects of academics and beyond. Those entering an honors level course next year need to expect a higher level of rigor from the course work and more challenging expectations. Students need to read one book from the list below.

GRADE 7 HONORS SUMMER READING PROJECT

Below you will find a list of books to choose from as you embark on your summer reading project. You must read ONE book from the list below. 

  • Lost Boy, Lost Girl: Escaping Civil War in Sudan by John Bul Dau (paperback (pbk) available)
  • The Front Desk by Kelly Yang
  • Hidden Figures (Young Reader’s Edition) by Margot Lee Shettlerly
  • The Radium Girls: Young Readers’ Edition: The Scary but True Story of the Poison that Made People Glow in the Dark by Kate Moore
  • Confessions of a So-called Middle Child, Maria Lennon (pbk and Kindle)
  • Fish In a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
  • Chains, Laurie Halse Anderson (pbk and Kindle)
  • Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling
  • Other Words from Home by Jasmine Warga

You will be asked to complete an assignment based on your summer reading in class in September. You will be expected to cite evidence from your books, so please take notes. It is suggested tha tyou follow the format below for taking your notes:

Directions: Complete the following on a separate sheet of paper.

  • Your Name
  • Title
  • Author
  • Plot Summary (5-7 Sentences)
  1. Exposition
  2. Rising Action
  3. Climax
  4. Falling Action
  5. Resolution
  • Describe the main character (5-7 sentences)
  • What characteristics (character traits) does the character exhibit to meet those challenges? (5-7 sentences)
  • Two quotes, including page numbers (or time stamp), that show a character trait of the main character.
  • Identify the theme/message in the novel. Remember a theme is a statement, not a topic.
  • Did you enjoy the book? Why or why not?
