The objective of summer reading for the students is to assist them in cultivating skills that have been built upon throughout their academic year. It is the hope that reading will strengthen and reinforce those skills that are vital to all aspects of academics and beyond. The English department recognizes that this year is one of unprecedented changes, especially in terms of education. Those entering an honors level course next year need to expect a higher level of rigor from the course work and more challenging expectations. In lieu of the traditional summer reading assignment, the 7th Grade Honors teachers have altered their assignment. Students only need to read ONE book from the list below. 

 

Listed below are resources for students. There is a list of suggested readings and also links to online access for students.

Grade 7 HONORS Summer Reading

Choose one book from the list below. Books are arranged by curriculum topics that will be covered during the academic year.

You will be asked to complete an essay/project based on your Summer Reading in October. You will be expected to cite evidence from your books, so please take notes. It is suggested that you follow the format below for taking your notes:

  • Include Title, Author, and Genre of the book.
  • Describe the setting (time and place) of the book, and include at least one piece of evidence (quote) from the book..
  • Describe the main character and his or her traits. How does the character evolve (change) during the course of the book? Include at least one piece of supporting evidence (quote) from the book.
  • Describe the main character’s conflict in the book. How is the conflict resolved? Include at least one piece of supporting evidence (quote) from the book.
