Teachers and kids across the country celebrated the annual National Read Across America Day on March 2. Pine Bush Elementary kindergarten students have a wonderful tradition to celebrate – they walk over to Pine Bush High School and spend some time reading with the high school kids and doing Seuss-related activities.

Students in Leeann Noonan’s Family and Consumer Science and Child Development and Human Development classes create memory games and puzzles, and read to the young learners, all with the Dr. Seuss theme. Because of weather, though, the event didn’t happen until March 18, but it didn’t seem to matter to anyone involved!

There were two Cats in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and many other high school students who became fast friends with some of our littlest ones from PBE. They did puzzles and tic-tac-toe, bowling and memory games. They colored and, of course, they read! It was a very memorable event for all involved!

Read Across America Day is a yearly observance inaugurated by the NEA (National Education Association) to commemorate the March 2 birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss was an American artist, book publisher, animator, poet, a political cartoonist as well as an author. He is the beloved author of more than 60 children’s books.
