Decoding the New Era of Wildfires

Seventh grade students in Melissa Prendys’ English classes recently completed a nonfiction unit exploring the causes and effects of wildfires. Throughout the unit, students learned how authors use nonfiction text structure, features, and evidence to help readers understand the authors’ claims.

After researching how wildfires start and how they impact ecosystems, wildlife, and communities, students brought their learning together in a creative way. Students worked with a partner and used Canva to create an informational website about the causes and effects of devastating wildfires. Their websites included facts, visuals, and organized sections that helped explain the science and real-world impact of wildfires.

“I am so proud of the thoughtful work and creativity students demonstrated,” said Ms. Prendys.

Researching for a cause! Our students leveled up their digital presentation game while exploring an environmental issue that will shape their future. High-tech skills meet real-world impact.
