Be an Upstander!

PBE student council members presented a No Place for Hate activity to all classes this week. The lesson: be an upstander, not a bystander.

Three fifth-grade girls stand in front of a class talking to younger kids about being an upstander.

An upstander is someone who witnesses bullying, injustice, or harassment and takes action to intervene, support the student, or stop the behavior. A bystander observes these incidents and recognizes them but takes no action, often due to fear.

Our student council did an excellent job of answering questions and giving examples of situations where students can act positively to help diffuse situations and support their classmates.
