Chilly weather makes for a brisk and fun pumpkin run at PAK

The Pakanasink Elementary School Pumpkin Run was a terrific event! Held on Thursday, Nov. 6 (it was rained out from the week before), chilly weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the students participating.

A large group of fourth-grade students start to run a race.

Students from grades 3, 4 and 5 were invited to participate in the four-lap race around the soccer field. Students were advised by their phys ed teachers Alyssa Valente and Stephen Distefano, along with student teacher Liam Dreher, to pace themselves for the one-mile distance. Some did, some didn’t. But they all had fun!

Each grade had its own race and was cheered on by their classmates, staff members, parents and guardians who stopped by.

Each student got a popsicle stick to show each lap completed. When they completed their final lap, they handed in their popsicle sticks. The top three boys and girls finishers in each grade received medals and prizes.

Coaches Valente, Distefano and Dreher were encouraging for those who participated. It was a terrific achievement to cross that finish line! For some students who struggled to finish that last lap, classmates jumped up and ran out on the track to walk alongside them. Great camaraderie!

Congratulations to all who finished in the top three of their class, as well as all who participated.

Great job!
