Students from the college level Leadership and Law Academy here at Pine Bush High School visited Washington D.C. this week, getting an up-close view of law enforcement, government and how it all works.
Their itinerary included the DC Metro Police Department, a DC Police Harbor demonstration, a tour of the U.S. Capitol and Arlington National Cemetery. Students also met with U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion Albany, which has supported the academy throughout its 25-year existence.
“These students didn’t just visit Washington-they experienced it through the lens of service, law, and leadership,” said Principal Aaron Hopmayer, who was one of the chaperones on the trip. “The academy has always emphasized character, citizenship, and civic duty, and this trip brought those values to life.”
The Leadership and Law Academy is one of four summer enrichment academies offered by Pine Bush High School. It is the most well-attended of the academies, centered on government, economics, and the criminal justice system. It is taught by social studies teachers, Town of Crawford police officers, and members of the United States Army, with many guest speakers stopping in to share their expertise.
